Educational Value
The Teaching Studio philosophy for all classes is driven by the goal to be a community that explores new ideas and ways of creating. While we are challenged by each other to build on the skills are already there. Beyond that, thinking like an artist engages even greater life skills like innovation, preserverance by learning from failure and boosts confindence in creating unique solutions to design and artistic problems. Students are encouraged to embrace the uncertain nature of artmaking and be present in the risk taking. "Supplemental Art Classes". In the Artificers Teaching Studio the students will explore a variety of media, techniques and processes as it connects to Art History, critique, aesthetic & assessment. This program will highlight the connection of artmaking while providing historical and cultural learning along the way. During the year they will explore art making and artist-thinking through ceramic artwork, drawing, painting, and color theory. It will be a school year of exploration and challenge where each student will create works that show high quality craftsmenship and reflect the true joy of art-making. Our small class sizes allow us to teach in depth and provides room for student questions and exploration as they learn. These classes are classified as beginners classes so you can develop your skills over time. Our teaching staff includes a professional artist, Trent Freeman. Trent opened T.E. Freeman Studio in 1997, creating personal sculpture for his clients. Trent is a graduate from Emporia State University where he earned a Bachelor's degree of Fine Arts in 1995. He also attended Kansas University and studied abroad in Australia. Trent's professional career began shortly upon graduation, creating works that adorn private and public collections across the country, as well as in local galleries and fine-art festivals. Educating and instructing others has been instrumental to the professional development of Trent's career. Facilitating workshops at colleges, leading continuing education classes for teachers and instructing at the Carnegie Art Center in Leavenworth Kansas, has allowed Trent to hone his own skills and contribute to the development of others. Trent and his wife Kate opened The Artificers in January 2023, after purchasing and restoring a 1890 Historic Queen Anne In Fort Scott, KS. In addition, we have an educator with a Bachelor of Fine Art with an emphasis in Ceramics and Graphic Design from the College of the Ozarks. She is a Highly Qualified" teacher of K-12 Art from Pittsburg State University as well as endorsed to teach ESOL and Family & Consumer Science. She is also currently enrolled at FHSU working on a Spanish Degree in Translating and Interpreting. She is currently an Instructor at Southern Coffey County High School in LeRoy, Kansas with 9 years of K-5 teaching expericence at Edwardsville Elementary School.
