Educational Value
The Cosmopshere offers a variety of STEM camps for students in the 3rd - 12th grade. Each camp has key focus areas where students learn about things like 3D printing, programming, and model rocketry. Starting in the 7th grade with Mars Academy, campers will also run simulated mission to space using our Astralis capsule and Mission Control. These camps not only focus on many STEM topics but the activities are made so that soft skills are also practiced. During our Emergency Training activity, campers practice communication skills by replicating the solution to the carbon dioxide problem on the Apollo 13 spacecraft. Campers emulate engineers by trying to build a model lunar lander that will safely land six marshmallows "astronauts" to the ground. They will also flex their creativity and problem-solving skills while making a Rube Goldberg machine and learning about simple machines. The Cosmosphere offers students experiences that may be out of the budget for some schools. During one of our camps, students attend an introduction to SCUBA course in Wichita, fly a single-engine aircraft, and run a simulated colony on Mars. Our former campers have gotten jobs at places like NASA, JPL, and Boeing. The types of activities provided depend on the student's age level. For a breakdown of the different camps and activities offered or to register for camp, please visit cosmocamps.org for more details.
